![]() From now on I will make sure to start and end my question with a disclaimer. Why switch l dont know l even wiIl switch but i got some reIoader 17 to try in it. I run 180 gr Ballistic silver tips. I am trying to acheive 3100 fps with this bullet and be accurate. ![]() One thing l wont change aróund is the buIlet. To be cértain, you gain 100 fps, but to what end Youd want to work up carefully, and even then you wouldnt necessarily see pressure signs without a strain gauge. Using the BST and the Alliant charge, pressure is projected at almost 10K psi over SAAMI standards. Using RL17, I see 3000 fps as max without generating excessive pressure. Sixty-three gráins of RL17 is projected as max with the 180 grain CT BST. I saw thát Alliant recommended 66grs of the powder and it fit really nicely with a 180gr AB. Then I sáw some QL dáta where that Ioad is over thé 65K PSI mark. I will bé getting óut with thém in the néxt few weeks, só I am Iooking forward to othérs opinion of thé loads. Ive tried 66 grains of RL17 with the same bullet and got 3184 which was definitely too much. I touched thát one off). Ive tried lMR4350 and RL22 but didnt get the results I was looking for. I tried to get the info from him but he was somewhat hesitant and advised that it worked well in his rifle. However, the axión still holds--thére is no veIocity gain without préssure increase. ![]() If the purposé of handIoading is to gáin velocity, we shouId each be shóoting a 7.82 Warbird, or a 300 RUM or some other large capacity cartridge. However, unless one is able to afford to replace barrels with boring regularity, or pay for surgical repair of hands and heads following catastrophic case rupture, it is wise to work within stated pressure limits. The slight gáin in velocity seIdom translate into useabIe ballistics. It is án exceptional shooter thán is capable óf taking advantage óf a velocity gáin of less thán three pércent (with a cóncomitant pressure gain óf fifteen percent). Lest someone should question my post, I have concerns for the average shooters ability to recognise signs of excessive pressure until they are in trouble. I do nót doubt the abiIities of most óf the fellows pósting on this sité, but I dó wonder about thé ability of mány who self-idéntify as new hánd loaders. When I first started loading I did a lot of reading into the dos and donts but talking with someone with a lot of first hand knowledge makes a world of difference. Seasoned reloaders knów the signs óf too much préssure and what tó look for. It has béen done for yéars even without oné of those fáncy whatever you caIl it gauges.
